Description
"This business of 'finding who I am' has always left me wondering", says Doris Lessing in the first volume of her memoirs. And yet, she has waited until well into her seventies to write a two-volume autobiography. It is not so paradoxical, though, since she has been all of her life "finding who she is" through her novels and her female characters. In this paper I analyze Under My Skin (1995) and Walking in the Shade (1998) in the light of the theory on women's autobiography, but also in the light of two of her most celebrated works of fiction, which feature other versions of the subject who was Doris Lessing, namely Martha Quest, in the novel that bears that title, and Anna Wulf, the protagonist of The Golden Notebook. *********
